In the early 1960s, the gas station that had historically operated on the site was replaced in favor of a more modern version, one that would come to represent the Googie aesthetic of the postwar era. It offered a popular new drive-in feature, whereby, for example, drivers could enter the gas station by turning left off Crescent Drive and exiting onto Little Santa Monica. The first gas station built on the current site was constructed in 1924 and featured a small rectangular building and a steel canopy that faced northeast toward the flats of Beverly Hills and, ultimately, Sunset Boulevard. The mile-long stretch of South Santa Monica Boulevard, adjacent to the gas station, is known in the area as “Little Santa Monica” to distinguish it from the larger thoroughfare to the north.Īlthough the Pacific Electric streetcar line originally operated along Santa Monica Boulevard until the last cars were removed in the 1950s, the popularity of the automobile transformed the Boulevard (also known as Highway 2 and Route 66), along with Wilshire Boulevard, into a major citywide thoroughfare, connecting drivers traveling from downtown and Hollywood to Santa Monica and the ocean. Envisioned as an elite community for the wealthy, particular care was given to the separation of residential and commercial districts, with Santa Monica and Wilshire boulevards serving as the respective northern and southern boundaries of the triangular-shaped commercial district. The Gas Station is located on a triangular parcel on the eastern end of the commercial district, known as the Business Triangle, across from Beverly Hills City Hall, a few streets east of world-famous Rodeo Drive. Intended for a location near the new Los Angeles International Airport, the gas station’s most striking feature is its space-age red canopy that swoops upward, appearing ready for take-off, and glows with florescent lights at night. It is an internationally recognized and beloved landmark, beautifully evoking a significant historical moment in the development of Southern California, when the automobile was king and Los Angeles was the city of the future. I’m sure some young popstars will be thrilled to design in-game swag to share with fans. Considering the game’s been around since 2006, many artists will have grown up on Roblox themselves. Collectables and achievements are nothing new in video games – or, as we’ve seen with NFTs in the last year, real life for that matter. The artists are also as involved with the creative process as they’d like to be. But while it’s Dad Law to roll your eyes and act like your wallet is welded shut in these scenarios, Spotify made clear that in-game merch proceeds go directly to the artist. As someone who spent money on multiple skins for the various Avengers in a game I don’t even like, I have no commentary on this. In-game, Spotify will host mini-quests, virtual meet-and-greets, and other interactive experiences with artists, including, obviously, selling MERCH! Yes, what kid hasn’t begged for some extra virtual dollars to spend on a virtual t-shirt for their virtual person. That’s all pretty familiar territory to online gamers, but the hook is how Spotify will use this space to host unique moments between artists and fans. The tokens you collect can be exchanged for in-game content, such as emotes and cosmetic changes to your avatar. The basic gameplay of Spotify Island is to parkour your way around a digital island paradise, collecting heart-shaped tokens, finding hidden easter eggs, and interacting with other players at beat-making stations. The game allows players to engage with user-generated content, mainly in the form of mini-games players can create and share. Look, Spotify, you know me, you know how many times a week I listen to Bruce Springsteen’s Darkness on the Edge of Town what kind of coffee did you expect me to order?Īnyway, the Roblox thing. Watch the night go from good to unforgettable. Gather your friends and family over for a bbq and break out your jello shot jenga set and a few rounds of your favorite flavored jello shots. The listing for the Tipsy Tower describes the product as follows: Jello Shot Jenga! A tipsy twist on the classic jenga game. Keep in mind each one is handmade, so there is a bit more of a labour cost involved. There you can can purchase one for your next summer BBQ for $150.00. But the original was made by HarrisonsWoodShop on ETSY, where it’s currently a best seller. There are several versions (or knock offs) of the game found online. In order to not get sued, the game decided on the name Tipsy Tower, so as not to run into the suits down at Hasbro, but the game looks and plays the same as the original Jenga game, except it’s bigger and you get drunker. There are several bricks in the game that contain cut out holes which perfectly fit those little plastic shot or jello shot cups. This version of Jenga, which is not an officially licensed Jenga product, will make you take shots every time pull out the wrong brick. Everyone knows that classic Jenga game, where the person with the steadiest hands is usually crowned the winner, and what better way to keep your hands steady than with some alcohol. An electric french fry cutter requires less effort to use and may be a good option if users have a large family, entertain often, or make sizable quantities of french fries regularly. These models don’t require users to pull on a level or press down on a handle instead, they are operated by pressing buttons to push the potato through the blade. There are also a few automatic, electric french fry cutters on the market that operate like a common food processor. These models are best suited for making curly fries. Still other french fry cutters operate by rotating a handle to push a potato through a spiralizing slicing blade. In other models, the potato is placed on top of the cutting blade and pressed down through the blade with a lid. Many models sit horizontally on a counter and have a handle that users pull to move the potato forward and press it through the slicing blade. Method of Operationįrench fry cutters may be manual or automatic. Stainless steel is a durable metal that allows french fry cutters to easily slice through potatoes and other vegetables. Regardless of the material used for a french fry cutter’s housing, most models will have stainless steel blades. Much like the best kitchen knives, tools made of stainless steel will not rust, but a cast-iron french fry cutter may rust if it is not properly cared for. Both of these materials are durable and suitable for heavy-duty use. All of them add into the mix of what happened and how this sub was operated,” Scafuri said. “We keep seeing parts that no one has seen in 150 years. What’s more, the scientists are finally beginning to get a handle on the inner workings of this thoroughly analog piece of military technology. Each step tells them more about the craft and its crew, from what their faces were like to the lucky gold token found in the captain’s pocket. “I would love to get to that point absolutely,” he said, but made no promises about whether it would be possible.įor now, scientists are focusing on the excavation, removing more of the corrosion and underwater matter from decades on the ocean floor. By measuring the forces, they finally had the data to back up a long-held suspicion.ĭespite these advancements, Scafuri says they were still a while away from being able to say definitively what had happened inside the submarine. “It was sufficiently large that the crew were killed.” In their 2017 study, researchers made a scale model of the submarine, then blew it up in a pond. “The pressure wave from the explosion was transmitted into the submarine,” graduate student Rachel Lance told Nature. It’s why researchers at Duke University proposed that they must have been killed instantly, perhaps by the blast from the submarine’s own spar torpedo. The Hunley was small and cramped-not even large enough for its crew to stand up straight-yet its men showed no attempt even to get away from where they were stationed. The discovery suggests two options: The crew may not have realized they were in danger, or not anticipated a need to surface quickly. The levers would have released 1,000 pounds of so-called “keel blocks,” bringing the submarine up to the surface and allowing the crew to swim away to safety. “It’s more evidence there wasn’t much of a panic on board,” Scafuri told the Associated Press. After removing layers of corrosion, silt and shells from the sub, his team of researchers found that the emergency levers were all locked in position. (Credit: De Agostini Picture Library/Getty Images)Īrchaeologist Michael Scafuri has been working on the submarine for 18 years. This suggests the crew may not have seen whatever sunk the sub coming. Researchers have found another piece to the puzzle: A hidden failsafe mechanism in the Hunley’s keel should have helped the crew escape the vessel, but it was never activated. The discovery has generated a raft of possible theories as to why it sank, and why the crew aboard didn’t seem to make any attempt to escape. Inside, all eight crew members were eerily in position at their stations, around a giant hand-crank that ran down the middle of the sub. Five years later, it was brought to the surface. Over 130 years after it sank, the submarine was found on the seabed in 1995. LISTEN: The Hunt for the Hunley on HISTORY This Week (It was recovered twice.) Its final sinking, shortly after it plunged a live torpedo into the hull of the Union warship USS Housatonic, has long mystified maritime and military historians. In a career of just eight months during the Civil War, between July 1863 and February 1864, the sub sank three times, killing nearly 30 men-including its inventor. But despite its claim to fame, it was a dangerous vessel to be inside. Hunley was a Confederate submarine with a crew of eight. Made out of 40 feet of bulletproof iron, the H.L. It was the first submarine in history to successfully sink an enemy ship. |
